Jan '07 - How and where to buy the best Art
You can search
websites, visit eBay, auctions, Art Fairs, Art Galleries.
Websites - are a good starting
base, but it can be difficult to visualize in your own
home, you are not able to ‘step back’ view
the work displayed on a wall, see the ‘real’
colours or the texture of the work.

Title:
Purple Haze
Artist: Richard Harrison
EBay - it is not always
possible to verify what is being sold is what has been
‘described’, and also what sort of condition
the work is in.
An art auction - a serious event
in the most glamorous settings. Only seasoned aficionados
are able to understand the practical details of a public
sale.

‘Title: Enough
Aritst: Kiko Rodriguez
Art Fairs - attending
can be like competing in an Olympic event, where there
is a 100 metre sprint followed by hurdles over ‘installation
art’ to secure that piece of art you can not possibly
live without! One eminent collector queued up for two
hours to get in to the Frieze Art Fair in London on
opening day and when the fair finally opened, she found
herself running through the narrow aisles, sweating,
she was swallowed up in the art frenzy, fighting for
art! She was invited back to a VIP early opening, but
informed the organisers that she thought it was an “undignified”
way to collect.
Art Galleries are by far the best
place to buy the best Art. Galleries offer you the opportunity
of seeing a lot of artists work in a relaxed and friendly
atmosphere with the ability to ask questions about the
artist and their work. Build a relationship with the
Gallerist, this person has their finger on the art market
pulse, moves in the right circles, has personal contact
with the artists and is aware of what art is being produced
and what will become available.

Title: Mediternanea
la casa del mar
Artist: Concha García de Pablos
The Demand for high
quality original works of art is outstanding, and in
some cases, some of the best art that comes onto the
market, changes hands privately and never makes it on
to the gallery walls. By building a relationship with
the Gallery, they will become aware of your tastes,
specifications, preferences and budget, so that when
new work becomes available they can contact your directly.

Title: Kiss
Aritst: Eva Navarro
Galleries have limited wall space;
therefore they only display a fraction of work that
is available. If there is a particular artist that you
favour, you admire their style, their technique, but
the art that is in the gallery is too big, too small,
or not ‘quite right’ for the room you have
in mind, then talk to the Gallerist, they will be able
to inform you as to what is available. They can also
talk directly to the artist and arrange to commission
a piece for you – this does not, as many people
think, have to be a painful or expensive option!
A German collector said “I
feel like in today’s art world there’s more
of an emphasis on having art than on loving art,”
Personally, I feel it is important to have art in your
life but it is also important to love it……!!!!!
